According to research, US whisky, rum and vodka sales have been declining over the past 12 months, and this trend persisted in March.

Volume-wise, alcohol sales in March decreased 4.3% from the previous year to 4.84 million nine-liter cases. According to data from the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), sales value also decreased by 2.2% to $1.09 billion.

March saw a continued downturn in the value and volume of nearly every spirit category covered by NABCA, which includes liquor stores and on-premise sales. The NABCA encompasses 18 control states.

The value of rum decreased by 9.2% and the volume by 11.5%. Volumes of vodka and US whisky fell 5.6% and 4.3%, respectively, while the value of vodka fell 4.9% year over year and that of US whisky fell 0.1%.

Tequila and cocktails, which included RTDs, defied the trend by increasing in both volume and value. Tequila saw a 14.3% increase in volume to 232,000 nine-liter cases, while its value increased by 14% to $20.28 million.
